김원중 교수가 옮긴 정사 삼국지의 마지막 권인 촉서. 평소 ‘삼국지’하면 촉나라부터 생각하는 나에게 약간의 충격을 던져 준 책이다. 지금까지 알고 있었던 도원의 결의는 없었던 일이고, 삼고초려도 거의 다뤄지지 않았으며, 소설인 삼국연의에서 담은 갖가지 모험담이 허구라는 것을 보여준 책이다.
연대별로 다룬 이야기 책이 아닌 인물별로 구성한 역사책인 만큼 글 자체가 짧고 간결하다. 기존의 삼국지를 생각하고 읽는 사람에겐 참으로 적응하기 힘든 책이지만 역사책이라는 사실을 생각하고 읽다보면 그리 나쁘지 않은 책이다.
촉나라에는 사관이 없었기에 위나라나 오나라에 비해서 기록이 적었다. 삼국연의에서 나온 디테일은 하나도 없다는 것은 삼국연의가 상당한 허구를 포함하고 있다는 뜻인데… 참 받아드리기 힘들다.
촉서를 끝내고 위서를 읽기 시작했다. 어떻게 읽다보면 저자인 진수는 조조를 영웅화 시킬려고 하는 것이 아닌가 하는 의심마져 듣는다. 조조의 기록을 담은 무제기의 양은 거의 100페이지에 달하니 말이다. 그 유명한 적벽대전도 역병때문에 조조의 군사가 많이 죽었다고 한 줄 적은 것 뿐이다. 정말 그랬단 말인가?
중학교때 16권 짜리 삼국지를 3번 정독했던 때의 기억으로 돌아간다…

It’s hard to imagine that the company thinks it could get away with what is an apparent scam to steal content. Some jokingly suggest it might have been a clever attempt to trick Viacom Inc. into doing something stupid (like use the browser) to lose some of its rights.”
