Olympics Ranking
This is my fourth Olympics ever since I moved to the United States, and there is one thing that has been really bothering me. For some reason, the media uses the total medal count for ranking instead of gold medal count. This year, US media is doing it again and they admit it.

“China is also threatening to overtake the total medal count — which is used as the primary measuring almost exclusively in the U.S. — as well.”
Why? Can someone please give me a reasonable answer why the United States doesn’t follow the international standard in many cases???
